Carl Loewen “Alte Reben” Riesling 2024
Electric, stony, and beautifully composed, this Mosel Riesling opens with white peach, crisp pear, citrus blossom, and rose hip, all threaded through with a cool slate-driven minerality that gives the wine lift and tension. On the palate, it feels sleek and incisive, with orchard fruit, floral nuance, and a long, mineral finish that makes each sip feel both refreshing and quietly serious.

Key Details:

Producer: Carl Loewen — a historic Mosel estate run by Christopher Loewen, known for old-vine Rieslings and a deep commitment to traditional vineyard material, including some remarkably old ungrafted parcels. The estate farms about 18 hectares, practicing organic.

Region / Appellation: Mosel, Germany. The Alte Reben bottling is drawn from older vines in multiple Mosel parcels, giving it both regional breadth and the classic slatey imprint of the valley’s steep slopes.

Varietal: 100% Riesling

Vintage: 2024

Style / ABV: Dry white wine; 12% ABV. “Trocken” on the bottling indicates a dry style.

Why It’s Special: “Alte Reben” means old vines, and this cuvée is built from vines up to about 70 years old, which gives it a little extra depth and concentration without losing that signature Mosel finesse. It reads like an introduction to serious dry Mosel Riesling: floral, stony, layered, and far more detailed than an everyday bottle has any right to be.

Food Pairing: Brilliant with schnitzel, trout, sushi, cold salads with herbs, or a pile of salty snacks on a sunlit table. We call this brunch wine.
