Heidi Schröck & Söhne ‘Pinot Pét-Nat’ 2021
Pinot Blanc + Pinot Gris • Neusiedlersee-Hügelland, Burgenland, Austria
Orange-tinted and gently fizzy, with dried citrus peel, nectarine skin, and pear blossom running into a bone-dry, earthy finish. Heidi Schröck took over her family’s winery in Rust in 1983, and in 2003 she became one of only a handful of women ever named Falstaff Vintner of the Year. Her oldest vineyard was planted by three of her great-aunts in 1955, and her twin sons, Johannes and Georg, now work alongside her, keeping the classic Rust wines going while playing with styles like this one. The fruit is farmed organically on loam and limestone, fermented on the skins for three days with native yeast in stainless steel, then moved into a big old oak cask, with zero sulfur added during harvest or fermentation. So fun.
Pair it with: a pork schnitzel the size of the plate, a lemon wedge, a patio.
