Plani Arche ‘Troncafuga’ Trebbiano 2024 Trebbiano • Umbria Bianco IGT, Umbria, Italy

lemon and crisp green apple with a little earthiness and a salty, savory undertone, plus a gentle creaminess from time on the lees. fresh, easy, quietly interesting. we picked up a good amount of chamomile and salted lemon as it opened.

Italo DiFilippo started Plani Arche in 1971, and today his son Roberto (first vintage, 1980) runs it with his wife Elena Pompeii, across the valley from Assisi. the winery takes its name from a local shrine said to mark the spot where St. Francis gave his “Sermon to the Birds.” they went organic back in 1994 and are certified, and Roberto still plows with horses to keep the soil loose and alive (check out the slightly west texas label!), with geese patrolling the vines to keep the foxes away. about 15 acres on calcareous clay, native-yeast fermentation in steel, six months on the lees in tank and six more in bottle. honest, old-school Umbrian farming. that’s lovely.

pair it with: leftover-turkey sandwich, roasted squash with sage and brown butter, or a plate of pecorino and honey.
